British Values

All schools are charged with promoting British Values, defined as the values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

At Glenbrook we put British Values at the heart of our curriculum, including the lessons designed to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

 

Democracy

Children are taught that their voices are important and will be heard, including through regular Pupil Voice exercises in school. They are listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and respectfully to one another, respecting the rights of other individuals.

Children have the opportunity to air their opinions and ideas through the school council. The elections of school council members are based on pupil votes, reflecting the British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action. The children understand that being a member of the council comes with great responsibility and a commitment to giving their all to school life.

 

Rule of Law

The importance of laws and rules, whether applied to the class, the school or the country, is reinforced at Glenbrook.

Children are taught the value and reason behind the framework of laws and rules in which we work; that they govern and protect us; the responsibilities this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken.

Through a whole school approach, children are supported as they develop the language and strategies to resolve conflict and to right wrongs.

 

Individual Liberty

Children are encouraged to make and manage choices, within a safe and supportive environment. We provide the boundaries and structure for our children to make choices safely, and to feel empowered by the exercise of choice.

Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely; for example, through e-safety lessons. From the start of their time in school, children are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, and to articulate and take responsibility for their choices.

 

Mutual Respect

Respect and responsibility are embedded values across all aspects of school life. Mutual respect is fundamental to the way we support and care for each other, the community and the environment.

Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on them and on others. Positive behaviour is recognised, and is rewarded through the Class Dojo system.

Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

At Glenbrook, we benefit from the rich cultural and social diversity in school. Pupils are provided with frequent opportunities to understand the value of diversity in school and the wider community. Assemblies are held regularly and centre celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures.

This is reinforced by teaching of RE and PSHCE, designed to allow children to develop an understanding of their place in a pluralist society.
